Funeral For A Friend – Last Chance To Dance Tour

Matthew giving the crowd some FFAF love.

Matthew giving the crowd some FFAF love.

I have missed the first time Funeral For A Friend came to Singapore and sadly this will be the first and last show I’m gonna see them live or ever. This Last Chance To Dance Tour is a farewell show to all the fans. A lot of member changes didn’t stop FFAF to lose their mojo but after longtime guitarist Darren Smith left there is no way telling if FFAF is really back on track. Music wise the sound have change from the screamo, post-hardcore and melodic style that we loved and adore to the more fast hardcore, metalcore style that they’re trying to achieve. And achieved they did. There are no bad album FFAF makes and I’m not just saying that because of blind fandom but because it’s a fact –  These guys makes music from the heart and it resonates on every song. Slapshock - CariñoBrutal‬

Slapshock – Cariño Brutal

A new take on the Cariño Brutal music video. This video has full of irony and gut twisting imagery through and through. It shows all the bu!!s#!t the Filipinos have to deal with every single day of their lives since the Spanish Era, World War II up to the present. Despite the regular bombardment of tragedy, natural disaster, heinous crimes, racial hatred, colonialism and corrupt politicians, the Filipinos can still wear a smile on their faces. Hope you like it, and if you do kindly share.

Alter Bridge – Singapore Rock Fest 2014

Alter Bridge – Singapore Rock Fest 2014

I don’t really miss Creed and I think it’s better that they don’t bother reuniting ever again. The new line-up is way more cooler than the former line-up. Songs are more deeper not that catchy (as Creed) which is good in a way. I just hope I don’t see KTV machines  flooded with Alter Bridge songs. Most likely that a Creed song will be sang on a KTV bar (bet my a$$ on that) 3 out of 10 guy will do. It’s a good thing that Alter Bridge’s sound is an acquired taste of music – either you love it or hate it specially for the fans of the old Creed. I think they’re awesome and damn good musicians, can’t wait to see them again. Here are some photos of day two March 6, Singapore Rock Fest 2014.

Rob Zombie – Singapore Rock Fest 2014

Rob Zombie crowd photo – Singapore Rock Fest 2014

Rob Zombie was first known as the lead vocals of White Zombie which actually sounds similar to his later songs minus the gimmicks. One example is the song Thunder Kiss ’65 which is from the early White Zombie album titled “La Sexocristo: Devil Music Volume 1”. Rob Zombie’s song has a more industrial metal and electronica combined sound to it with matching horror or shock rock imagery. Continue reading

Korn – Singapore Rock Fest 2014

The comeback of Korn’s guitarist Brian “Head” Welsh

March 5, 2014 is a very special date for me and for most people who lived on the mid-90’s which is my college years. Korn and White Zombie were the main feature on MTV’s Headbangers Ball and on Beavis and Butthead. Maybe most of younger ones doesn’t know the significance of Korn and White Zombie in the scene, they revolutionized (or modernized) Metal and brought Metal to the mainstream. Some might think this was a wrong move from them ‘coz these two juggernauts of Nu Metal have a very strong underground fan base before they became “Rock Stars”.

Five Finger Death Punch – Singapore Rock Festival 2014

Five Finger Death Punch – Singapore Rock Festival 2014

This guys are awesome. They reminded me of Pantera, very Southern… the eagle on the backdrop is a dead give away. The music not quite ‘coz their style is more of Southern Metal rather than Groove Metal like Pantera or Throwdown. The music is more inclined to the likes of Godsmack and Disturbed more formulaic. I also like bands with mascots like Iron Maiden’s “Eddie the Head” and Megadeth’s Vic Rattlehead, if you haven’t notice the skeleton character on their artwork is their legendary mascot named “Knucklehead”. Youth Of Today

Youth Of Today @ Bound By Honour 10

Youth Of Today @ Bound By Honour 10

It’s been almost three (3) decades since Youth Of Today hits the streets of New York to spread the word of hardcore, youth crew style! We all know Ray Cappo the musician slash guru slash spiritualist slash vegan slash – this guy is just talented! He is also known as front man of several bands like Better Than A Thousand, Reflex From Pain and my personal favorite Shelter. Youth Of Today’s Sound is way different from Shelter – is a Krishnacore band a mash up of Krishna consciousness and melodic hardcore and also promotes straightedge and vegan lifestyle. Seeing YOT at the first time is like being a kid again, Ray Cappo is like a spiritual messenger. I see in his eyes the love he gives to the crowd and the fans. He is a big fan of the fans. Everyone just loves the guy. He even did a hand stand requested by the audience showing how game he was. Speaking of audience, the crowd is just awesome! They (including me) love all the tunes YOT played, sing-song with them and mosh with them – good times! Coincidentally the same day is Singapore Youth Day – Youth Of Today on Youth Day! Hmm catchy. This is the 10th edition of the Bound By Honour created by Reconstrux Booking (Singapore). This show is like a mini Southeast Asian Hardcore Fest. Bands from Thailand’s Monument X and Philippines’ Piledriver came to celebrate this event also the Lion City favorites straight edge hardcore – Straight Forward and growing legend Overthrown shared the stage with YOT. Ten awesome hardcore events and we expect more!!!

Overthrown @ Bay Beats 2013

Overthrown - Front man Racthmad Zainal

Overthrown – Front man Racthmad Zainal

I really don’t know how to start this article but all I can say is that Overthrown is one of the best hardcore bands of this era not just in Southeast Asia but globally. I’m always a big fan of New York Hardcore (NYHC) and always looking for the traditional sound of it. Look no further ’cause OT is very true to the sound, the message and idealism behind what HC is all about. They truly are “hardcore” figuratively speaking. If you grew up listening to Agnostic Front, Madball, Strife, Earth Crisis, Terror, Hatebreed and SickOf It All you would definitely like OT they’re kinda mix of those influences.  Continue reading

Memphis May Fire Live @ The Axis Hall Singapore

Matty Mullins – Power Vocals [click image]

The Show

Memphis May Fire is the fisrt concert I shot for the year 2013 and I say it’s a great start. Summer is almost here in Southeast Asia and we need rain and it came but in a form of …fire?  That is Memphis May Fire but it’s only March? Yeah I know I’m bad at jokes but seriously this band made it rain fire!
