Alice in Chains – Singapore Rock Fest 2014

I’m thinking of a good introduction for this awesome band but I don’t know how to start. Maybe I’ll start when I first heard one of their song. Once upon a time there was a radio station called 97.1 WLS FM (I also don’t know why I even tuned in here, LA 105 and NU 107 just started) this was on my high-school years, fourth year to be exact, every Saturday night the radio station feature songs or bands that aren’t usually aired on regular basis, genres like hard rock, metal and grunge were not the norm ’cause they usually air pop music and other junk, this was also the time when Nirvana’s hitting stardom. When I first heard this Alice in Chains song I was already dozing off to dreamland, suddenly I was awaken by the strong lyrics of the song and how surreal the whole music was then the words “I Stay Away” echoed in my brain, in that instance I became a big fan.

Saved my allowance and bought the albums “A Jar of Flies” and “Sap” in cassette tapes. I borrowed “Dirt” first from my classmate in college and bought my own copy, when I heard that a new album is out I rush out Odyssey Record Store and bought the self-titled album with the tripod dog on the cover. The song “Grind” is just freakin’ awesome. I got “Facelift” after the self-titled album, yeah I know it’s a bit late and I realized I should have bout it first for this was the conception of Alice in Chains and I kept myself away from it for years. I could go on and on about this, I’m just glad they decided to tour in Southeast Asia. Also saddened by the lost of Layne Staley and Mike Starr it just not the same. Well I guess I should move on. William DuVall captured the essence of Alice in Chains in a short period of time which is amazing. Some subtle differences from Staley’s style but nothing to complain about, it’s still Alice in Chains. OK I just want get this out of me that they didn’t do “Man in a Box” well I guess for some religious themes, also no “God Am” for obvious reasons but c’mon NO “I Stay Away”? Why? After “No Excuses” topping the charts the 2nd single that certified the album “A Jar of Flies” Platinum status was “I Stay Away”. Maybe I’m asking a little too much. I’m just happy to see them perform live, I got myself (almost died for it) a guitar Pick from Jerry Cantrell an Alice in Chains concert shirt and an experience I’ll never forget. Definitely I’ll be telling this story to my grand children and my great grand children. I’ll stop here before I get teary-eyed, hope you enjoy the photos ’cause hell I enjoyed taking them.
